about 2.1 gb and going done with every duplicate and thing I don't want in there. However I don't mind the 15 min wait to get into game as it gives me time to play a little smash brothers on the side while I wait.. My version of elevator music.... It usually takes less than 5 mins to load a city to a max of 10... haven't seen it go over that... Sometimes it takes 30 mins to start the game... At least now I have the icon with the no intro attatched to it so I don't have to worry about that taking too much tile and hitting ESC at the intro video.

That is the datpacked figure, as it would be roughly 2.8 unpacked. Still weeding out the things I won't use and other things is a proccess none the less I am use to. All though you way is good for space at least. I just have too many habits to break or modify or whatever... heh...

As far as the deep folder thing, I try and make sure before I dat pack that isn't so. That way the packing goes easier for me... but that is my way... It is deffinately a good way to have not so many folders, and to merge folders into one that are neccessary to keep the number down....

Mine never get above 500MB or so, as I am very selective about what I use.

That is the bad side effect of being a packrat by nature... Always wanting more variety, however I'm not so greedy to disregard the need to downsize my plugins. It is neccessary for the moment until I have a faster proccessor to work with, but even then it is always best to learn from mistakes even if done maybe a couple times the same mistake but in a different way. The world of fine tuning.... The Direct approach.... I'll probably keep it around 2 gb or lower, even with new stuff, that way it not so taxing on my system. I don't know how some people can work with 3 or more.... As that is too much.... especially for one region.
Most of which that I have are growables, I've been mainly weeding out the plopables that came with those growing lots. As well using cleanitol as referance to find any duplicate of dependancies to weed out... That's an eye sore... Never could get that program to work the way intended to get rid of those duplicates, only was able to get it to view what was missing and those that are duplicates. Never delete anything, if not move... Oh well I don't mind. As the turtle crosses the finish, I'll be ready to play again once sorted out.

Well my packrat venge started pretty messy, so I have to clean up the results a bit per say. I do want to get the files under 2gb as I have said... But that will take some time, which for the moment I have. Better use it while it lasts though... or at least I keep telling myself, but no worries. Then again I am a bit too laid back about it, and the reason it taking so long. That is between my Lot making... Can't help it I love making lots, even if at times it is somewhat a pain & eye sore at times. When I have an idea I want to get it done, well for the most part, but breaks are very well needed between the projects, if not during... Like my Modular lots I plan to release sometime, however I need to modify the ones needing so, and then afterward reinput the icon for them... That is the semi-hastle I have with those lots. There are just sooooo many of them in the collections.. From A to H minus G, which hasn't been made yet.
More or less it leaves a small amount of time for shuffling through the plugins, but I manage... heh... It is good to hear others utilizing space, I'm envious. Can't change a habit over night, but it is worth trying. Although I enjoy my habits so I adapt/adjust as I said earlier...

yeah, that's about my figure too. My 'Basics' (plugs that I always use) has about 450Mb, and depending on the city/region I play an additional 100 to 150Mb for specials.

@tamorr:
wow, 2.1 Gig - no wonder you wait half an hour for startup. I'm surprised you can still play at all, with the machine you described. Mine isn't that great either, 1.8 proc w/1Gb Mem and an ordinary Gcard under win2K ... at my 'worst' times I had about 1.5 Gig Plugins, any city over 300K became unplayable. Just thinking of zooming in or out made me cringe *laugh* ... I mean I'm sort of a packrat too, I think I have downloaded close to 4Gb of stuff, but most of it I don't really need (or want) in my cities ... =;o))

I absolutely understand your 'wanting more variety'. That's why I shifted to regionplay, making more but smaller cities, ranging from 5k to 300k sims.

Actually, all of this is kind of what led to my creating the selector program in the first place.

wow, that's a lot, even with a strong machine. What do your ingame menues look like? I mean, that's another reason that drove me to reduce drastically, I started to hate these endless scrolling sessions

Arrrr ... when I saw that I thought YESSSS!!! I so wish I could use it, but I won't touch this .NET-stuff with a ten foot pole again. Did once and it screwed up my whole system, had to do a complete reinstall ... That's maybe because I still run Win2K ...

Well, I just bought an old machine from one of my sons, I'll slap XP on that and maybe give it another try :-)
It's high time I separate my games from my biz-machine anyway LOL

Yeah I really don't mind the wait at all, as like I said I play Smash Brothers on the Game Cube while I wait... in anticipation. I have to agree though that I as well have around 4gb or more stuff, but not all of it is installed... You see I log everything that I do install in roughly 3 files; 2 text files and 1 rtf file. The rich text file is my database of what I have installed, in alphabetical order. The other two files are my log file which is the order of each installed, and a file with all the Dependancies I have installed in alphabetical order. Doing it this way has helped me reflect on what is and isn't installed. Although I don't exactly list all the files that come with each zip, I only list the zip that the files come from.

I know it's not the greatest way to organize what I have installed, but at least I know which is. Other than that I basically do the manual downsizing and note that in the main Rich text file. This way I'll be able to know at a glance what I have in my playable directory, when the time comes to do so.

Don't really need a file for the Development directory as that varies anyhow. It is all relative to the way I think... Somewhat.

Win2k? I don't even know if .net is compadible anyway... Yeah I believe it is better for the XP or Vista... as I am not exactly sure when that first came out. I think it was around the time of the dreaded Mellinium... which is what I originally had on my system, when I bought it. I got the XP home edition soon as it came out and could afford it, and then still had problems before my major crash in 2005. After that I made sure I installed Mellinium and install XP over it wiping the Mellinium install. So in a way it made a clean slate. Haven't had a bad crash like that in a long time thankfully. Never messed around with 2k before, just mellinium. It is definately a change, well slightly.... fewer bugs and problems than mellinium. Oh well I think I rambled enough about that....

I do have 2 other computers... One being a laptop with a screen that doesn't work, and the other well..... more or less to say it couldn't run SC4 even if I tried... It's a 8 RAM 486 model... Very old computer, but still works, if I dust it off a whole lot before booting it up. I really don't know exactly how much space it has on it... I believe maybe around 100 mb maybe.. I'm not sure.. haven't messed with it in a while..

Oh and the laptop has a better processor than this one does, however that is little to say how much drive space and graphics card it has.

from 1st click of the SC4 icon to region screen with skipping the intro is about 7 minutes.  loading a large tile is 3 mins.  all that with an unorganized plugins folder.
